In this glossary, you will find several concepts that were analyzed in the Architectural Analysis module.
Backup wall
Noun
Are cold-formed steel framed walls with water-resistant sheathing and concrete masonry.
Example: BW Systems are the ultimate backup wall systems, providing superior air, water, thermal and vapor protection in an allin-one barrier component compared to traditional multi-component wall systems.
es: Pared de respaldo
Brick courses
Noun
A course is a layer of the same unit running horizontally in a wall. It can also be defined as a continuous row of any masonry unit such as bricks.
Example: Brick courses are used in construction mainly for the construction of walls or partitions.
es: Hileras de ladrillos
Concrete block
Noun
A concrete block is primarily used as a building material in the construction of walls. It is sometimes called a concrete masonry unit (CMU). A concrete block is one of several precast concrete products used in construction. The term precast refers to the fact that the blocks are formed and hardened before they are brought to the job site. Most concrete blocks have one or more hollow cavities, and their sides may be cast smooth or with a design.
Example: Concrete blocks are stacked one at a time and held together with fresh concrete mortar to form the desired length and height of the wall.
es: Bloques de hormigón
Dovetail insert
Noun
A dovetail is a joint in woodworking where two sides are fitted together with interlocking pieces. You can also use the word dovetail to show how other things fit well together — like how your picnic plans nicely dovetail with the sunny forecast.
Example: Dovetail grooving inserts are used to machine O-ring dovetail grooves with 66° undercut angles.
es: Inserto de cola de milano
Gravity load
Noun
Gravity loads are body loads available only in Structure. These loads simulate the force of gravity as it affects your model. When you define a gravity load, you specify the gravitational components of the load in each coordinate direction.
Example: Gravity and functional loads are loads which exist due to the unit’s weight, use and treatment in still water conditions for each design case.
es: Carga de gravedad
Hanging off (of)
Verb
To be suspended from something.
Example: Did you know that the gutter is practically hanging off the side of the house? We should probably get that fixed.
es: Colgando de (de)
Horizontal mortar joints
Noun
Bed joints are the horizontal mortar joints, or the bed of mortar that the next brick sits on. Full mortar bedding joints cover the entire top of the masonry unit and are the most common bedding type. Face shell mortar bedding has a narrow bed of mortar at the faces of the masonry unit and should only be used in interior non-load-bearing construction.
Example: The struck mortar joint is employed for horizontal joints.
es: Juntas de mortero horizontales
Ladder-type systems
Noun
Stone anchoring system for cavity or insulated walls. The backup is reinforced with a ladder type reinforcement with projecting boxes and a factory-welded restraint bar.
Example: A ladder type systems are widely used in isolated walls.
es: Sistemas tipo escalera
Laterally
Adverb
Laterally it is understood to refer to the side, edge, band, margin, edge, flank, bank or side, of an element, thing or a particular place. On both sides, alluding to a site or place in particular or that is or is located.
Example: The window was nearly as wide as it was high, and opened laterally from the center on hinges.
es: Lateralmente
Masonry ties
Noun
Wall ties, sometimes called ‘brick ties’, are used in buildings with cavity walls. They are used to join the two leaves of a cavity wall together, allowing the two parts to act as a homogeneous unit. Hidden from view after construction, wall ties play a vital role in ensuring the stability of a building.
Example: To prevent the brick veneer from falling off the building, we use masonry ties.
es: Lazos de mampostería
Multi-story
Adjetive
Having more than two stories a multistory apartment building.
Example: Private developers have also built several multi-story apartment complexes in the Collegetown neighborhood.
es: Varios pisos
Relief angle
Noun
A Side Relief Angle is an angle between the part of the flanks of a cutting tool below the cutting edge and a plane perpendicular to the base.
Example: A shelf angle is a structural steel member that supports and transfers the dead load of the exterior brick beam back to the building frame.
es: Ángulo de relieve/desahogo
Supports
Noun
The links, ligatures or supports are devices that restrict in some way the movements of the structural system and allow the transmission of efforts.
Example: The function of a recessed support is to prevent displacement on the plane and rotation.
es: Apoyo/soporte
Tie (something) back to
Verb
To draw and restrain something back and out of the way.
Example: Be sure to tie the cables back or they could cause injury or death while operating the machine.
es: Atar (algo) a la…
Transfer
Verb
If you transfer something or someone from one place to another, or they transfer from one place to another, they go from the first place to the second.
Example: "The foundation is the intermediate element that allows the loads supported by a structure to be transmitted to the underlying ground..."
es: Transferir
Wedge anchor
Noun
A wedge anchor is a type of specialty fastener used to attach objects to concrete or masonry structures. They may be used to secure a piece of artwork to a brick wall, hang duct work or plumbing pipes from a ceiling, or bolt an item into the floor. A wedge anchors may also be known as anchor bolts or expansion bolts in some areas.
Example: Wedge anchors are used to reinforce concrete in older buildings. Old buildings, which are in poor condition, can be restructured using these anchors.
